We encourage basic research aimed at conserving the environment, carrying out projects to generate alternatives for sustainable use and mechanisms for protecting key areas.
We apply our knowledge
to resolve conservation problems and favour appropriation of the country's
biological and cultural heritage by the Colombian people.

This programme aims to encourage research for conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems in Colombia. Five research areas have been set up: biological inventories, ecological restoration, conservation of threatened species, sustainable use and management of natural resources, and agro-ecology. Specific projects will be carried out within each research area in different parts of the country.
This programme aims to develop and implement necessary actions to protect key conservation areas. Areas may be designated as such for the following reasons: they are priority areas for a particular community; they have high biological and landscape diversity; they in danger of disappearing imminently; they represent threatened ecosystems. This programme will support local or community initiatives to protect areas, providing biological reasons for conservation through the research programme. The programme will co-lead local initiatives and act as a mediator between the community and state entities or funding organisations.
The idea of this programme is to implement knowledge obtained from research in Colombia in order to solve immediate problems related to both conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems. Thus, initiatives will be supported to resolve specific problems including the development of activities for this purpose.
This programme aims to instil recognition, awareness and appropriation of Colombia's biological and cultural wealth within society. To achieve this purpose, publications will be produced both for the scientific community as well as society at large. Environmental education programmes will be implemented and supported either through direct participation or the production of written and audiovisual material.
