Sentido
Natural
is a non-profit
making NGO, founded in 2003, working to conserve and study tropical ecosystems
in Colombia. The NGO is registered with the Environmental Authority (DAMA)
in Colombia.
Background
Colombia's
biological and cultural wealth is being lost and it is our responsibility
to ensure that this does not continue. Colombia is undoubtedly one of the
wealthiest countries in the world in terms of natural resources. However,
its historical development has brought about a gradual deterioration of
the environment. Only 10% of the extensive mountain forests known by our
forebears remain; of the dry forests, unique in terms of their biological
rarity, only two percent remain. The delicate complexity of rainforests
is disappearing to make way for fields and pastureland. Measures for their
protection and conservation are being taken by government bodies, international
organisations and local groups. However, as much as these measures are necessary,
they are also not enough. Support is required from all fronts as well as
commitment from all Colombians. Sentido Natural was born from this need, and its clear mission states its key objective
- "to study and conserve ecosystems in Colombia". It is not an
easy task given the diversity and complexity of ecosystems in Colombia,
including the human component and its socio-cultural context.
